Kenya 2023: Chapter 33 – Black Rock Pride

We cut through the area around Keekorok and headed east, into another area of the park that we had not been to before. Hills rose up on either side and the valley narrowed. Before too long we came upon several members of the Black Rock Pride, sleeping in the late afternoon. Not much to see though, just more sleepy lions in the bushes.

We continued east and came upon a lone male cheetah in a small amphitheater formed by several bushes. Some Thompson gazelle and a Topi were very close, but the cheetah was lazy and more interested in grooming and rolling around in the dirt. Even when the Topi came well within striking distance, the cheetah paid it no attention. The Topi was granted another day to live.

We headed back towards camp, passing a small group of elephants consisting of a baby that was about three months old, a juvenile, a subadult, and an adult female. We took the time to watch them graze for a bit, the lower light becoming a challenge for our cameras as the clouds darkened overhead.

A lone hyena trotted into the area in which the elephants were grazing. We were hoping for some drama, but the elephants were too formidable and the hyena too smart.
