Kenya 2023: Chapter 26 – Cubs, Revisited

On our way out, we stopped to see the cubs again who were not far from where we left them in the morning. It seemed like a week had passed. The smell of wet grass hung in the air, the clouds still threatening to unleash more water. A handful of trucks were stopped. Lenny spoke to one of the guides.

All of the guides that we saw were men. Ed dwelt on that point for some time, trying to remember if we had seen any women on the last trip, but he could remember none. We finally asked Lenny about the paucity of women in the field. There are not many female guides and much of it stems from limited space in the camps. A lot of the guides bunk up together. There is not enough space to make separate accommodations for women. Additionally, these camps have only a communal shower, which makes it difficult for women to get time in. They would have to get up much earlier than everyone else. In the field, men have an easier time relieving themselves, or as we came to call it, checking the tires. To Lenny’s knowledge, there are only 2 female guides in the entirety of the Mara.

Lighting conditions and the long grass, as had happened in the morning, thwarted our ability to get some decent shots of the cubs. We made sure to spend time enjoying watching them play and headed back toward Purungat Bridge, where we took a picture together with Dad’s 35 mm.

Dinner was a spicy pasta that was absolutely delicious. Greg had two helpings.
